Are You Wondering if God Isn’t Talking to You?
Have you ever asked this question, “God where are You?” Have you ever felt that He was not with you, that He had left you?
Or maybe you asked God, “Why aren’t You answering my prayer?”
The Psalms are full of verses that ask these very same questions. Isn’t it comforting to know that the saints of old wondered the same thing?
Job is a good example of this too.
Is God Ever Silent in Your Life?
In our walk as born-again believers, it may seem that God is silent, but God is never silent.
What looks like silence and inactivity to us is God allowing us the opportunity to listen to “the still small voice” and to see the provisions that He has made for us by faith.
Remember Elijah? He was so depressed that he went to hide in a cave on a mountain. He looked for God in all the wrong places… the wind, the fire, the earthquake… But where did he eventually find Him?
“And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.” I love the NLT version of this verse :-).
God is involved in every area of a believer’s life–the very hairs on our heads are numbered (Mark 10:30; Luke 12:7).
However, there are times when we have to walk in obedience to the light that God has given us before He sheds more light on our path. Tweet
“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).
Key Takeaway
Today, if you are in this place, remember God speaks to us through His Word. If God seems silent, try asking yourself one of these questions:
1. Have I stopped listening for His voice?
2. Have I allowed the cares of this world to plug my spiritual ears?
3. Have I neglected His Word?
I read a blog a few weeks ago that talked about our preoccupation with social media… maybe this is your distraction.
Remember, He may be speaking to us in a gentle whisper, so in a world of noise and distraction, we really need to refocus our attention on Him.
God does not often speak to us today in signs, wonders, fire or wind, but His Spirit does speak to us through the Word, and in that Word we have the “words of life. ”
Shhh… quiet your heart… Listen… do you hear Him? (share a comment)
I really enjoyed this article Patty because I struggle with this very same thing even after walking with the Lord for quite a number of years now. Sometimes I ask if God is listening to my prayer and I wonder why He is doing the things that He is doing.
I know Bible verses like Isaiah 55 that say that His ways are so much higher than our ways but sometimes that just doesn’t help. I found that when I am honest with the Lord and I tell him my frustration, then God meets me where I’m at and communicates to me exactly the way that I need to be communicated to.
He is faithful 🙂
Yes Peter you are right, God does want us to be honest with Him, but He also wants us to remember the He is God and that though things don’t make sense to us, they make sense to Him and His ultimate plan for us. This has been hard for me too, and at times it hasn’t helped me but GOD is faithful to gently remind me in that gentle whisper to be still and know He is God…
Thanks so much for letting me share my post….
You can share your posts here anytime Patty. It’s only been 1 hour since the post got published and people are already sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest 🙂
Thank you… I’m truly honored
I do wonder sometime, but my Faith carries me through; I may not get what I want, but I know my Lord is in control & works all things for my good! Even if things don’t go the way I choose. He is closing and opening doors that are necessary for me to thrive! Amen?…Thank You Lord!
I totally Amen you on that Kelly 🙂
Amen Kelly… Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God…
Amen, I have found in my walk that God is always there, it is I who walks away and at times I walk out of hearing range until the Holy Spirit brings me back in range once again. Thank you sister, God bless you.
Good point Bobby We do walk out of range of His hearing… thanks for sharing!

I couldnt hear God’s voice for a few weeks. Sermons and bible studies werent moving me. I begged and pleaded with my Lord, I asked him why he wasnt talking to me. I let the darkness in and it consumed me. I was full of anger, I was depressed and felt forsaken. I was so sad, I cried and cried. I even thought of losing my life, but God spoke to me through his word. He was always speaking to me, but my anger and my flesh were covering my ears. I wasnt obedient to God, I always wanted to do it my way. I have learned in this little bit of time that its not my way, but its the Lord’s way. I have no patience, but Thanks be to My Lord, I am learning. You see I said I loved God, but yet I couldnt forgive people for the wrong they had done to me, yet I wanted to be forgiven for my wrongs. I couldnt forgive myself and that drove me into a horrible place in my walk with the Lord , I strayed. I strayed into darkness and despair. I wasnt living by faith I was living by feeling. On Sunday April 7th, 2013 the Lord spoke to me again, through Pastor Steve’s message. Right away I knew where I went wrong, yes I let the darkness in and it was time to make everything right with God. I asked the people I hurt to forgive me and most of all I asked my God to please forgive me and take me back. =) I felt welcomed with open arms. Now I just have to make sure I always listen to what God says and ABIDE IN HIM!!! Amen
I love that you said God was always speaking to you… He is, but all the “stuff” we carry around as you described keeps us from hearing Him. Praise the Lord my brother! Isn’t it good to be loved by such an amazing GOD!
Yes it is!!!! Praise Our Amazing God!!!!!
How can someone hear Gods true voice, if the Bible they are using, has scriptures deleted, and it is compromised?. It is no longer holy. God warns us, about adding and changing scripture. Revelation 22:18-19 tells us firmly not to do this, that even our salvation is at stake. Being denied, access to the Holy city. And our names removed from the book of life. Psalm 12:6-7 tells us he preserved His word. The King James Bible is preserved, for over 400 years. Proverbs 30:5-6 tells us we will be counted with the liars that do that. The body of Christ needs to see this, for it is not in fear of God, concerning this. I was happy to read your thoughts. But when you referred to the NLT, I could see, myself that your words are correct, but they need further excellence to refer someone to the King James. Just my thoughts……
Thank you for sharing your thoughts Elena. I read the KJV and use it my main reference when it comes to God’s Word. I love it and I use it for my personal study… but I do like reading translations like the NLT, especially when I have a favorite verse in the KJV that I am reading, like the one in the blog. Love hearing that His still small voice… is a gentle whisper. Blessings!
Elena, the King James Version is not the only version that is based on the actual manuscripts of the Bible. There is also the New American Standard Bible which is based on the ancient manuscripts. I believe what Patty was trying to say that she doesn’t rely on the other versions for her to hear from God. It’s just for her to get a different perspective, that’s all.
Thank you Peter, that is exactly right. I really do love the Word and I read it in different translations/versions to gain a broader understanding of the scriptures. God is so big… bigger than anything that we can even fathom, and His Word is so deep… yet scripture says in Deut 30:14 that the words is very near us in our hearts and in our mouths… so how can it get there unless we study to show ourselves approved… How else can we know truth unless we study it…
