Homeless Man Sues Parents for Not Loving Him Enough

Did you read the strange story about the homeless man who sued his parents for not loving him enough, blaming them for his broke lifestyle?

True story.

Here is an excerpt from the article that appeared in Associated Press:

A Brooklyn man slapped his mom and dad with a $200,000 lawsuit that blames them for leaving him homeless and destitute because they allegedly raised him and his sibling in a poor household — and didn’t love him enough.

Bernard Anderson Bey, 32, claims he never got enough affection or support from his parents — so now he wants them to mortgage their share of a Bedford-Stuyvesant home so their family can buy two Domino’s Pizza franchises to employ them all, according to the bizarre suit.

“Our whole family is really poor, and my father doesn’t care about the situation,” Bey said. “I feel unloved and abandoned.”

The Father’s Love

Unloved and abandoned, two of the bleakest words in the English language.

The lawsuit asking for money to buy pizza franchises may be silly at face value, but here is someone who is suing for “not enough love.”

Do you think he would feel the same way if he knew the love of his heavenly Father? It would be impossible to feel unloved if he did.

Who among us has not felt unloved at some point? Who among us was lucky enough to have great God-loving and nurturing parents and didn’t come from some type of dysfunctional family?

Who among us has not played the blame game or felt the world owed us a living?

The Root of the Problem

It’s all because we were lost and spiritually dead inside. We didn’t know it until God opened our eyes.

While this man is an extreme example of not being loved, his problem mirrors the world around us.

Many feel unloved in this busy, transient society where iPhones replace face-to-face contact.

We have taken God out of our classrooms, out of public meeting places, out of the courts, government, parks, work places, practically every facet of our lives,  all under the guise of a “fair society” that fears offending anyone.

Remove the source of love – God is love – and is it any wonder we feel unloved?

This man who thinks suing his parents is the answer to being unloved, could have all the love on Earth if he wanted it.

The Bible on People and Love

What does God’s word say about love and the human condition? These five verses found in 1 John 4:7-11 speak powerfully on the subject and even more powerfully about the God who loves us:

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” – 1 John 4:7-11

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

God is love.  God loves us.  God is what love is all about.

Don’t just read the words, but take a minute to grasp that truth and let it resonate in the deepest part of your soul.

Key Takeaway

God loves us so much he allowed his Son Jesus to be nailed on the cross in payment for our sins, paving a path to a relationship with the Father through the Son.

His plan is for us to live a love-filled life, to love God as He loves us, and to love one another as Christ loves us.

Rather than look back in anger to what wasn’t there, this man today can look to what is right here now – love unimaginable from our heavenly Father to us.

This feeling of being unloved, we as a people have created this illusion ourselves. God has always been waiting to love us, to fellowship with us, to have a loving relationship with us.

God, your Father, awaits with open arms to love you.  All you need do is run to him with arms wide open.

Since Easter is right around the corner, how has God’s love changed you?

God’s love has changed me in so many ways. Before, I used to be selfish and it used to be all about me. Now that I gave my life to the Lord, I actually am able to put other people first instead of me.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I succeed at doing this all the time, but at least now I can love on people from time to time.

I loved this!! It’s so amazing just how much our Father unconditionally and sincerely does love us! He is more than enough, because He is truly all that we need! Human love can only go so far, they can only love us so much; but God’s love is not only unfailing, it’s also everlasting! =] God bless you!

I love how you said Amanda that human love can only go so far. It’s so true because were so limited by our human abilities. I’m reminded of that since this is Easter week.

Thanks Peter! For the longest time I would try and fill that empty hole in my heart with everything this world had to offer…drugs, relationships, material things….you name it! But after I asked the Lord to come into my heart I’ve come to realize that He is truly all I need. I was talking with Patty this morning and she put it perfectly…”God is enough”. =]

Amen to that Amanda! You know something as you share a part of your testimony it’s almost hard to believe that we used to be these big sinners and now we’ve been transformed in the most amazing way. I think sometimes that the longer that we walk with Christ the easier that it becomes to forget the way we used to be.

I have to be careful of that.
