Could You Be a Hypocrite Without Knowing It?

Dec 8, 2014 | 4 comments

Have you ever failed to take your own advice?

There are moments in life when we’re all guilty of hypocrisy.

It’ not because we want to be guilty, but it’s usually because we fail to understand the events that take place in our spiritual life.

The Lord is continuously working behind the scenes in all areas of our life.

When we don’t understand what God is doing in our life, we have to trust that He knows what’s best for us.

He’ll tweak and stretch us into something that sometimes takes us years to understand.

As He works, sometimes we won’t understand all the reasons behind why things happened the way that they did, until a later time.

As a result, we can end up judging and condemning something or someone prematurely.

At the same time, sometimes we’re guilty of practicing exactly the same thing without us knowing it.

When we do this, we condemn ourselves.

For example: What is worse?

To steal a dollar from a rich man, or to steal a paper clip from a paperclip factory?

What about condemning those that miss church? Do you condemn them but yet you watch it on TV?

Beware of Hypocrisy Creeping into Your Life

Mathew chapter 23 describes how Jesus feels about religious hypocrisy. He’s not only addressing the scribes and the Pharisees but us as well.

Matthew 23:24 says,

Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

These religious people would use a cloth to filter their wine so that they would not drink gnats, because they were unclean in the sight of the LORD.

They would worry about these little insects, but yet they’d commit bigger sins in their own life.

Jesus was exaggerating in this quote so He could put emphasis on the more important matters.

The camel was an unclean animal as well, it was condemned by God to eat.

What was the difference between drinking a gnat or swallowing a camel? They were both unclean!

The lesson is that we sometimes worry about the little sins that others are doing, and yet we don’t see the big sins in our own lives!

Sin is sin, no matter how you excuse or justify your own sin.

You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself?  You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?  -Romans 2:21

As an example, let’s take a look at King David.  He committed sexual sin, he murdered, and he lied!

When the prophet of God (Nathan) came to condemn him, he did not expose David’s sin the way we would have expected him to.

You can read about it in 2 Samuel chapter 12 if you like.

The prophet gave King David an example of someone else, and allowed David to condemn himself, by condemning that someone else!

You’re a Work in Progress

God works in mysterious, yet in very simple ways.  Jesus said:

Judge not, that you be not judged.  For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.  And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?  Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye?  Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. -Matthew 7:1 -5

The truth is that we all fall short of the glory of God.

Yes… it’s true that some people give the appearance that they are flawless.  But the truth is that the Lord is also working in them.

As the Lord grows us and makes us beautiful, we have to remember that we are what we are, and we are where we are because of HIM!

Let’s avoid condemning ourselves by condemning others.

Have You Ever Done This?

Here’s a story for you:  A family that was considered by their church to be very spiritual was as usual having their weekly Bible study.

It was the father, the mother, and their two children. Of all the Biblical topics, they were discussing the sin of lying.

The father said: “The LORD hates liars… The enemy is the father of lies! My children you must always speak with truth!”

As he was talking, the phone rang.  His wife answered and she said “Honey, it’s for you.”

The husband asked, “Who is it?”

She said, “It’s your brother.”

He  whispered, “Tell him I’m not home.”

The father was doing the right thing by taking the time to have a Bible study with his family. However, the message he sent by his actions was that of a hypocrite!

We’re sometimes guilty of doing the same thing.

It’s not that we want to act like hypocrites, it’s that we sometimes miss the small details that speak so much about the state of our spirituality!

Don’t Miss the Point

I don’t want you to miss this very important point.

If we are in Christ, then we have an advantage because the Holy Spirit will speak to us about our walk with the LORD.

It’s up to us to pay attention.  We must remember the things that truly matter to Jesus: justice, mercy, and faith!

God sets for us the perfect example we should follow! Let us live out our lives in truth by living justly, giving mercy, and having faith!

Let’s remember that God is concerned with the inside of us, not our outward appearance!

All the worship and tithing in the world can’t conceal who we truly are before GOD!

And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. -Hebrews 4: 13

With all this being said, let us love one another, and show each other mercy for in what we condemn others, we also might be condemning ourselves!

The best thing we can do is go to God in prayer and ask Him to search our hearts.

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting. -Psalm 139:23-24

You may want to pray this Psalm now.

God bless you!
