God is God.
There is no other god but our God.
He is the First and the Last.
The Alpha and the Omega.
He is our Creator. He created the universe. He created Man.
He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
His Word is just that. His Word. It is not to be altered, added to or taken away from.
Is What You Believe Truly A Reflection Of God’s Image?
As Proverbs 30:5 notes, “Every word of God is pure.”
He is love, and He loves you more than you can imagine.
To keep you safe and help you live an abundant life, He’s set up certain commandments and restrictions that you may not like.
If you alter the Word of God, you’re believing in a god made in your image.
This is the opposite of the one true God who made you in His image. He made you to be righteous and justified through His Son, Jesus Christ.
It’s an unalterable fact that God has a purpose for all that He does. The fact that you don’t always understand the mystery of God is no excuse to carve a god into your image.
His ways are not your ways. The clay can’t tell the potter what to make.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55: 8-9)
Trying to find a god that bends to your will merely opens the door to false teachings, false prophets, false promises, false salvation, and empty worship.
And yet, many will worship God if He is the God they want Him to be.
You should worship God because of who He is…the one and only Jehovah, the God of Israel, who created Man and sacrificed His Son, Jesus Christ, for mankind’s sins.
Sometimes you and I can act as if God being kind, loving, forgiving, and promising us eternal life through His Son is not enough.
No, we want a god that lets us do our own thing, or who serves our purposes.
We should, instead, worship a God who loves us and seeks to protect us from ourselves.
Those who turned their life over to Jesus and came out of a world of darkness, drugs, alcohol, gambling addiction, and immorality know what I’m talking about.
But having a God that breaks the chains of bondage is sometimes not enough.
One of the dangers of wanting to worship God is you can wind up worshiping the wrong god.
There is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This is the God of redemption, the God of salvation, the God who offers us eternal life through Jesus.
He hears the voices of His children.
All other gods are false gods.
How Do You Know Which Jesus You’re Truly Following?
Various religions preach a Jesus different than the one described in God’s Word. More often, they alter God’s Word in their own bibles.
God warns us about this in Deuteronomy 4:2:
“You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.”
The danger with altering the Word of God is you get false instructions. You wind up worshiping man and not God.
Can You Identify Some of the Ways God’s Word Is Altered Today?
Religions such as Jehovah Witnesses and Mormonism, for example, worship a god of their own creation.
They call him Jesus, but it is not the true Jesus. It is a copy of Jesus molded in their image.
Mormons will tell you they believe Jesus is the Son of God, yet they do not believe in the trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
In Mormonism, Jesus is a product of relations between god and his goddess wife who used to be people from another world. (Read more about Mormonism)
According to Jehovah’s Witness’ theology, God is a single person, not a Trinity, and Jesus was resurrected in spirit but not in body.
That is not the Jesus described in God’s Word.
History has shown that both organizations have molded God into their image, by changing their edicts and beliefs to suit the changing times. (Read more about Jehovah Witnesses)
Even so-called mainline “Christian churches” seek a god made in their image.
They want a “contemporary God,” who surely couldn’t have meant what He said all those years ago. Surely something was lost in translation in that time span.
Either you believe the Bible is the infallible, unshakable Word of God, or you don’t.
There is no middle “altering” ground.
How To Prevent Yourself From Also Being Deceived
The Bible warns of being deceived, a particular issue among new Christians seeking guidance.
2 Timothy 4:3 warned of false teachers and churches, a warning that echoes loudly today:
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”
That’s the key to believing in false gods: They seek to serve their own passions.
Take homosexuality for example.
Several of today’s Christian denominations bend the Word of God to allow homosexual pastors.
In an excerpt from his book, “The Gay Gospel? How Pro-Gay Advocates Misread the Bible,” Joe Dallas says there are four mainline protestant denominations with thriving pro-homosexual groups:
- The United Methodist Church
- The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America
- The Presbyterian Church USA
- The Episcopal Church
What Does The Bible Really Say About Homosexuality?
In the Old Testament, Leviticus 20:13 calls homosexuality “an abomination.”
In the New Testament, Romans 1:26-28 calls these “unnatural passions” “vile and debased.”
It’s clearly stated. How can you alter the meaning? Those who do are only deluding themselves.
But delude themselves they do.
Theres now the Queen James Bible or the “Gay Bible,” which alters God’s Word on homosexuality in order to justify a desired lifestyle.
The Christian Apologetics and Research Ministries has an insightful segment on changes made in reference to homosexuality. (Read more here)
Key Takeaway:
Jesus is the Word, and the Word is Truth, and Truth leads to salvation.
The truth is rock solid and unshakable. It cannot be altered.
The truth may offend, but it remains the truth.
The truth may hurt, but it is still the truth. It cannot be changed.
The truth corrects the false and the wayward.
The truth is a straight path, not a detour through political correctness.
The truth is there to protect us.
Without the truth, we worship a false god.
False gods do not answer prayers, rescue us, fellowship with us, redeem us, or lead us to salvation.
Only the one true God can do all that.
Remember, God molded you in His image and has set you apart.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
There’s a danger for today’s church when it attempts to be tolerant by mixing political correctness and Christianity.
Anything that is added to God’s Word, or is taken away from God’s Word, alters God’s Word.
It leads God’s sheep astray. Don’t be fooled.
