God’s Unique Ways to Help You Overcome Your Fear of Death

Oct 12, 2015 | 91 comments

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” -Philippians 1:21

Are You Afraid to Die?

The word “death” sounds so final when you say it.

In our politically correct world, we attempt to soften it by saying someone “passed away” or “passed on.”

An atheist might say you die, and that’s it. You’re dead, period.

An agnostic might say, “I don’t know where we go when we die. But if there’s a God and heaven is real, then I think I’m a good enough person to go to heaven.”

A Muslim would say if my good deeds outweigh my bad deeds, Allah will bless me with an eternal paradise.

A Buddhist might say my ultimate goal is Nirvana.

A Mormon could say, when I get to heaven, I’ll keep working until I’m more like God.

But the Bible says, in Hebrews 9:27,

“And as it’s appointed for men to die once, but after that the judgment.”

Can You be at Peace About Death During Your Lifetime on Earth?

Guaranteed we’re all going to die someday. And yet we deny it, live on the extreme as if we can “cheat death.”

Or conversely, you might fear it and decide not to extend yourself at all. You end up missing out on the adventure this life holds.

But for the Apostle Paul, his life was identified with Christ. His life was wholly devoted to the gospel.

He was bound by the things of God. His burden was to preach Christ and Him crucified.

Death to Paul was just a delay until he could be with Christ.

In the delay, however, he knew he could serve others best by preaching Christ. He knew that anything he accomplished in this life was “rubbish” compared to gaining Christ (Philippians 3:8)

Now compare Paul’s life to yours. Too many of us “American Christians” are waiting for the easy way out.

“Lord just rapture me now and get me out of here!”

But what did Jesus tell you to do in the Parable of the Minas in Luke 19? He said, “occupy” or “do business, till I come.”

Are You Busy About Your Father’s Business?

All of us are born on a given date. All of us will die on a certain date.

It’s the time in the middle that’s important. Will you make it count?

What are you living for?

Leonard RavenhillI is best known for his quote, “Are the things you are living for worth Christ dying for?”

Leonard Ravenhill (1907-1994) was a Christian evangelist and author who focused on the subjects of prayer and revival.

He’s best known for challenging the modern church to compare itself to the early Christian Church as written about in the Book of Acts.

Through his teaching and books, Ravenhill addressed the differences he perceived between the New Testament Church and the Church in his time. He ended up calling for a return to the principles of biblical revival. (Source)

Notice above the inscription on Ravenhill’s tombstone, “ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE LIVING FOR WORTH CHRIST DYING FOR?”

What a timeless question this man asks literally from his grave.

Is anything you and I living for worth Christ dying for? It’s truly a matter of priorities, maturity, and perspective.

When you were in the world, you lived for the weekends and recreation. When you’re totally oblivious to the things of God, your focus is on self-gratification.

But as a follower of Jesus Christ, you’re called to be heavenly minded. Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”

When your:

  • Devotional life is consistent and deep
  • Relationships are loving and caring
  • Ministry is fulfilling and active

Then you’re in a position to “occupy” and do God’s business.

It’s a commitment no doubt. It’s not easy, certainly. But it’s the place you’ll find peace with God, contentment, and love.

In other words, when you’re walking with God and seeking His perfect will in your life, it’s a constant drive that dominates your thinking and behavior.

So What Dominates Your Thinking Right Now?

Usually, it’s money, relationships, work or school that consumes your thinking. Or it may be your physical health and the fear of death that’s screaming at you.

If you are thinking any of these things right now, then STOP!

Ask God’s Holy Spirit to break the chains of worry and doubt that have put you in bondage.

Bring the Lord into the things that are distracting you from a loving relationship with God and trust Him in the fear.

Remember His perfect love casts out all fear.

1 John 4:18 says, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”

So are you afraid to die?

Several years ago, before I became a Christian, I was in a mortuary watching my dad say goodbye to his mom.

I was sitting in a very long rectangular room. At one end was a bench where I was watching my dad say goodbye to Grandma.

As he was respectfully addressing her, a sense of peace came over me. It was the same feeling I experienced when my son was born.

I believe it was God gently telling me that death is nothing to fear. It was like God was saying that death is a natural part of life.

Once I received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, I understood this great gift and how He conquered death. It reveals how you can have peace in your eternal security with Him.

Or, do you just not want to think about death?

What does the Bible say we should think about?

Philippians 4:8 says:

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

How Can You Think Lovely Thoughts When You’re Worried?

Here’s how:

1.  Don’t Worry By Following The Advice in These Verses

First of all, you know you’re called not to worry.

Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Worry is a direct result of not trusting God. But faith is the fruit of knowing how much God loves you and has a plan for your life.

2.  Rejoice in Christ’s Victory at the Cross

Second, you rejoice in Christ because your Savior conquered death at the cross.

1 Corinthians 15:55 “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” This is why we worship Jesus.

3.  Remember That Your Hope is in Christ

Jesus is preparing a place for you in heaven.

John 14:2 says,  “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”

It’s your hope in heaven that helps you overcome any fear you have of death.

Again look at life through the Apostle Paul’s perspective.

As he was inspired by the Holy Spirit, he proclaimed his position on living in this world compared to living eternally with Christ.

Paul says in Philippians 1:23, “For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.”

So whether you are in this world now or living in eternity, either way it is “far better” to be with Christ than to fear death, Amen?

My friend is dying (stage 4 brain cancer) very sudden and aggressive. He text me today and said he is scared. I didn’t ask him what he is scared if because I think it is obvious; the pain, the unknown, leaving loved ones, believing in God, but the flesh wondering about, again, the unknown, finality. My faith is teetering, so much personal loss this year already, what do I say to him. My heart is breaking and I find myself sobbing multiple times a day and night and have been since this terrifying surreal nightmare began 2/12/17. He is in NY and I am in Texas. I’m broken, angry, and am struggling to pray to God because I’m so hurt. Why? Why this loving, funny, giving, incredible being?

We have all and will be in both your position and your friends. But truly, what else in the universe could comfort us and them in our pain, a pain that shakes us to the core, and makes us question existence. But there are many clues to the mind of God. People who have had a glimpse of eternity and returned, with Gods blessing, to tell us of things to come. There is a study being conducted right now, on the last words of the dying, with words like, oh wow, oh wow, as it seems the person has one foot in this world, and one in the next. All of creation speaks to my existence, a quote from God himself, and either nothing is a miracle, or everything is, and I believe everything is, a quote from Albert Einstein. Finally we have something so powerful, prayer, for St. Paul said it best, We grieve like others, but not as those who have no hope. God Bless Both of You.

Dear Shaniva, Keep praying for the Lord to answer your request. Take to heart His victory over death and sin at the cross. Be strong and of good courage and the Lord will bless you with the truth that we, the children of God, will be with Him when we die physically. Our souls (our true selves) will live on forever. Let this word comfort you, 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Also, 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

Im not afraid of heaven or anything like that.. i think im afraid because i feel as though my life so far is unfulfilled in ways. I feel like im just getting older way to fast and i have nothing to show for it. I grew up in the church of God. I believe that Jesus and God exist. I am just afraid of the idea of death being so final and maybe its because im so used to being here on earth. It just raises a lot of questions. Like why are we here i n the first place? If we were born to die then what was the point in being born?

I, too, have been struggling with fear of death. It’s mostly the fear that when the time comes, its dying and then there’s nothing, and the fear of leaving my family. I’ve been trying to hold on to faith, knowing that there’s an eternity in heaven, and praying that the Lord help me overcome these fears, but I do have times when the fears do hit on occasion and it sometimes becomes a bit overwhelming. Well have our ideas and opinions but in the end the decision is yours I’m not so sure if your fear of taking this trip has maybe more to do with separation anxiety or even possibley the thought that perhaps feeling for some reason maybe even a little guilty that some how you can’t enjoy this trip or deserve it for some reason because my friend we pray trust in
God for guidance and strength to do the right thing and as long as you trust in
God and go with your heart it will be OK can I guarantee that no but I can guarantee you that if the fear of dying is the only thing preventing you from going on this trip then you are sadly mistaken because when our time comes that’s nothing you do unless you caused it yourself and could see it coming is gonna prevent it from happening we are in control of slot of things but death isn’t one of them and your fear is only preventing you from enjoying the journey along the way my prayers are with you and your family and may
God bless you and keep you safe and guide you in times like these good luck.

i have an awful fear of flying and I am flying on a long journey tomorrow morning.
I so needed to hear this at this time as I suffer from anxiety.
I pray that I can completely put my trust in Our God and not worry about dying or the way I will die.

Thanks again and God Bless You!

Reading this gives one comfort. I am also very afraid of death. I have been diagnosed with Bone marrow cancer. My life has changed so much as i hold onto the love and attachment here on earth. At this age of 46 i once sat sobbing for a healthy life. I asked Jesus to give me time and as i fell asleep i hward him speak and say until you are 61. I pray that everyone who has this fear be lifted from fear . Although i am a hindu, i pray and have respect to all religions.

Thanks so much. Humble, genuine, earnest, helpful. There are many who have gone before us. I have dead unborn children whom I will finally see.I am afraid of the physical moment of death, but have been terrified of physical realities before and have made it through. If Jesus is real and will not leave us orphans, if He really loves us (and He loves me more than my mom, who is my rock)then He won’t abandon me in that moment. He’ll race to my side with angels. This thought helps me. “Oh wait for the Lord with courage;be stouthearted, wait for the Lord!”I repeat this throughout the day. I have a lot of difficulties and fears.

Thank you for this, I have also been overcomed with fear of death. I was reminded I need to be going about my Heavenly Father business till He calls me home and to be filled really with the love of Christ because His love is what casts out all these fears. I also rebuke the spirt if death in the name of Jesus, may He fills us all with the peace of God that surpasses the understanding.

Before reading this I felt less like I was afraid of death, but like I was afraid of heaven. But now I realize that Im just afraid of the fact that since we cannot comprehend what heaven is like I’m more afraid of leaving the normal life that I have on earth. I can’t say that I am no longer afraid because as a sinner I will always be veering from God in some way, but I have accepted my fear and try to allow God to comfort me.

I completely relate to what you’re saying! I have been struggling with the fear of death even though I am a believer. Even though I know I’m going to Heaven. It’s hard for our human minds to comprehend Heaven and I get overwhelmed…

I am 11 years past brain tumor surgery, and scared for some reason, tho I know where I am going, I trust in Jesus, but I am just dust, and scared of leaving this life I guess. it’s been a long hard road…but God did get me thru it all. I know I will see my mom, dad, gramma Sally, and many others. I saw my parents were scared too, I guess it is fear of what is only known to us thru Gods word and not actually going thru actual death yet, but I will see many loved ones, it is bound to be better there!!!!! Life on earth is what we should really fear, not knowing how end times will actually play out and what non believers will face.

Oh my goodness, same exact thing. I just want to feel normal again. This fear has overcome me. I just want it to go away. It is so incredibly hard. I’m trying my best to trust God and not fear and know that I’ll be in Heaven when I die…but my thoughts continue to race. I pray to Him everyday to take away my fear.

Lingam, I am experiencing the very same. I have been a Christian all my life and never felt this way. It just hit me one day and the fear is ruling my thoughts to the point of not being able to function normally. It’s been months now. I’ve been praying and diving into God’s Word, just begging for peace of mind.

Thank you brad for this post I have so much to learn and I have been raised in a church and I am so bound by these chains extremely bound. I have tried to make myself get rid of this fear of death but it’s hard because I am stubborn and would like to hear my Lord audibly like as if we were face to face and my fear of death is so horrible and strong that it puts me to tears because I know I can’t out run it and I know that my day will come it’s just so terrifying. But your post has helped me some but, not fully I think it’s just between me and my father at this moment and hopefully I will get my answer or understanding from him soon.

trying to trust in the Lord with all my heart but these feelings of doom are keeping me from living my life like
God’s word says I can.I read your whole article and the comments that followed but I just want peace and
stability in what life I have left .Please pray for me and my family that God will get through to me and give me

Praying for you, Howard. God grant you peace and hope in knowing that He is with you even now. Maybe you could go talk to your pastor? Is there a men’s group at your church? Find some fellow believers to hang out with. You don’t have to go through this alone. God bless you!

Hello everyone. I believe in the Lord . I believe my loved ones are watching me from above. But I’m not sure if I’m worthy of the Lord’s company when I leave this world and it’s really playing games in my head. I’m not a church person and it’s not by choice. I have the strong urge to go to church because all the passages I read and hear are truly comforting to me and soothes my hurt. I’ve been married to the love of my life since I was 22. I cherish every moment I spend with her and miss her dearly when she’s not by my side. We have a beautiful daughter who’s all grown up and she has 4 boys of her own which I love with all my heart. Now I’m stuck in a position I don’t like. I desperately need and want to go to church and ask the Lord for forgiveness for abandoning him for the last 30 years. I was young and stupid and I didn’t know better. I never lost my faith in the Lord but I never showed it publicly either and now I feel worthless. I sure hope and pray he forgives me . Just writing this has brought my lots of tears of regret and sorrow. If I could do it all over again it would include the Lord everyday…..please forgive me Jesus

    Hi Brad,
I have recently started to be afraid of my parent’s death, and also the death of the ones I love.
I have been telling them that I love them more, thanking them, helping them, and trying to make their lives better, but sometimes, I am still crippled by the fear of them leaving the Earth, and not being able to feel another hug, another kiss, or hear another “I love you” from them. I am a Christian, and have been seeking guidance from God, but I would just break down and cry sometimes. What can I do? Thanks!
P.S. I know that I still have a long time to spend with them, we’re all young, but I’m still paranoid.

I came down with a virus almost 4 months ago. It turned bacterial and I had 3 courses of strong antibiotics and a course of prednisone. I now have yeast infection that keeps coming back stronger. I am 47 years old and have a husband and 3 grown children. I am petrified of leaving them. I am saved (asked Christ to forgive me of my sins after admitting I am a sinner and can not save myself). I know that I am going to heaven and have studied how I get there and even what it will be like, yet I can’t get past this fear of the unknown and of leaving my family. Prayers would be appreciated. This post is beautiful and I will read it daily and pray about it. Thank you
    Much love to you all.

I need help ! Please our father said we are wonderfully and fearfully made but I really don’t think that the fear I have is normal. I am afraid of my own thoughts the fear I felt has been with me since I was 6 years old way too young for anyone to experience death when it overcomes me it takes over me to the point that I have to cry out to my father and then the fear goes away but it continues to come back I feel that it’s not normal it’s not godly and I don’t know what to do I seek guidance hoping that our father would speak to me out loud to calm my fears but I hear no voice I fear that I want to seek help from the other side but I’m afraid if I do there will be no coming back I don’t know what to do I don’t know why I fear living more than dying and I have nobody who I can talk to who will listen the fear is coming more and more frequent to the point that I think I have a phobia but is specialized in an area of my life but when the fear hits me it’s mostly in small or dark places the feeling is so strong I start banging my head against the wall trying to distract me from the fear then I remember a saying when Jesus said that even the rocks will cry out that’s what I feel when the fear hits me. I don’t really know why it’s so strong lately unless it’s some of the most recent news I’ve discovered in the last year-and-a-half that might be making it worse. If you know anyone who can help please email or text ASAP pontiacj2@gmail.com or please text 707-346-1314. Thanks
