January Prayer & Fasting

As we begin the new year, we are setting aside the month of January as a dedicated Month of Prayer at Calvary LIFE.

Throughout January, we are intentionally creating space to seek the Lord together, to draw near to Him, and to align our hearts with His will for the year ahead.

Prayer is not an add-on to our faith, it is the work of the ministry. It is a vital spiritual discipline that helps us live with an awareness of God’s presence in every area of our lives.

Why a Month of Prayer

In Acts 2:42, we see the early church committed to four core practices: the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayers.

As a church family, we want to build spiritual strength by returning to these foundations, with a focused emphasis on prayer.

January is an opportunity to slow down, remove distractions, and intentionally seek the Lord together as one body.

What This Means For January

During the month of January:

    • Regular ministry activities will be paused to make room for prayer
    • We are encouraging everyone to engage in daily prayer throughout the month
    • Our focus will be on seeking God’s will and direction for this season and for the year ahead

This is not about adding more to your schedule, but about reordering our priorities and making space to be with the Lord.

A Daily Prayer Focus

As a church, we are committing to pray daily throughout the month of January, using the Lord’s Prayer as our guide.

Rather than repeating words out of routine, we are using this prayer as a framework to help us focus our hearts on God, His holiness, His will, and our dependence on Him.

Prayer and Fasting

Along with prayer, some may also choose to fast as a way to further focus their hearts on the Lord.

Fasting is a personal spiritual discipline and participation may look different for each person.

The heart of this month is seeking the Lord with sincerity and humility.

Questions About Fasting

What is fasting?

Fasting is intentionally giving up something for a period of time in order to focus more fully on prayer and seeking God. It is a way of saying no to distractions so we can say yes to God.

Do I have to fast from food?
Not necessarily. While many people choose to fast from food, others fast from social media, entertainment, or other activities that normally take their time and attention. The goal is not the sacrifice itself, but the space it creates to seek the Lord.
How long should I fast?
There is no single right way to fast. Some may fast for a meal, a day, or several days. Others may choose a partial fast over a longer period. We encourage you to pray and ask God what is appropriate for you.
What if I have health concerns?
If you have medical conditions or health concerns, please consult your doctor before fasting from food. You can still fully participate by choosing another type of fast.
What if I’ve never fasted before?
That’s okay. Many people are new to fasting, and there is no expectation that you do everything perfectly. You may choose to start small and simple. What matters most is your desire to seek God, not how experienced you are.
What if I struggle or miss a day?
Do not be discouraged. This season is not about perfection or performance. If you miss a day or struggle to stay consistent, simply begin again. God’s grace meets us where we are, and He honors a sincere heart that keeps turning back to Him.
What should I do during a fast?
Use the time you would normally spend eating or engaging in what you are fasting from to slow down and seek the Lord. Pray honestly, read Scripture, and take time to listen.

This does not need to be complicated. Even a few intentional minutes can be meaningful. Journaling prayers, reflecting on the weekly devotion, or simply sitting quietly before God can help keep your heart focused on Him.
