Find True Love This Valentine’s Day in Jesus Christ

Feb 6, 2017 | 0 comments

I recently received an inheritance from my mother, who had passed away.

In a way, it was her Valentine to me.

She left it to me out of her love.

I did not earn this inheritance.

I did not work for this inheritance.

I didn’t even ask for this inheritance.

And I surely didn’t deserve this inheritance.

And yet, here it was before me.

Someone loved me enough to make sure I inherited something great.

This inheritance of love is my Valentine from my Mom.

And the same is true for you as a believer.

Someone loves you enough to make sure you inherit something great, too.

An inheritance of love from your true love Valetnine—almighty God.

Claiming An Inheritance From Our Heavenly Father

But for me to be rewarded by this inheritance I must claim it.

I started thinking … having Jesus in my life is a lot like my Mom’s inheritance.

In both instances, I am totally undeserving of these “gifts.”

In both instances, I had to “claim” these gifts of love.

I have already mentioned how I don’t deserve my Mom’s inheritance.

Well, we as a people don’t deserve the mercy and grace God affords us through his Son, Jesus Christ.

But it’s an inheritance I will gladly and wholeheartedly accept!

True Love is Found in Jesus!

Out of His love for us, God sent His only Son into the world as “our inheritance.”

Here is what 1 Peter 1: 3-4 says about this great love:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.”

We shed our sin nature through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

And through Christ, we become new creatures, incorruptible and undefiled.

God wanted to reconcile His people to Himself by ridding them of their sin nature.

And He did it through the love He had for us.

That love was given to us in the form of his Son, the man-God Jesus.

That love called for God sacrificing His Son on the cross in our place (for there is no remission of sins without a blood sacrifice, according to Hebrews 9:22-26).

And so it is that Jesus is God’s ‘True Love’ Valentine to us.

It is a Valentine for the ages.

We did nothing to earn this Valentine.

We did not work for this Valentine.

We certainly do not deserve this Valentine.

And yet, our Valentine is there for the claiming.

An Inheritance for the Future Too!

Thanks to this inheritance, we will have a place in heaven.

Jesus prepares a place for us in heaven, if it were not true He wouldn’t have told us so. (John 14:2-3)

God guarantees our inheritance in Christ through the Holy Spirit.

“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Eph. 1: 13-14)

Jesus is a Valentine of Love and Strength

The word Valentine is derived from the common Roman name of Valentinus, meaning strength.

How appropriate then that Jesus is our Valentine … our strength.

As Phil. 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Jesus is our Valentine Rose.

He is the “rose of Sharon and the lily of the valleys.” (Song of Solomon, 2:1)

This Jesus, this beautiful Rose, creates in us a sweet fragrance to God:

“For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.” (2 Cor. 2:15)

Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords—what a Valentine for the ages!
